AIMS and OBJECTIVES

The Association was set up in the wake of the Charities Act 1992 (subsequently consolidated into the Charities Act 1993). These acts require all charities to present accounts, which must comply with certain disclosure requirements, and which are subject to an independent review or audit. In all but certain defined cases, the acts also require the trustees to prepare an annual report containing specified information.

The higher administrative bodies of a number of Christian denominations sought to give guidance on these accounting issues. However, it  is often difficult to reduce complicated legislation to a level suitable for untutored book-keepers and further help appeared to be desirable. The Association endeavours to bridge this perceived gap between the needs and understanding of ordinary treasurers and the complexity of legislation and the advice provided thereon by central financial administrators. The focus is on communication in a simple form, concentrating on the important issues, and the provision of guidance on changes in law and practice applicable to church treasurers on these and other associated issues.

A loose-leaf handbook has been produced which will be updated from time to time. A regular newsletter aims to keep members informed of current developments, and the Association is involved in organizing and lecturing at training seminars.

The Association does not seek to undermine the authority of any church but to assist each authority in helping treasurers to understand and follow the guidelines that each church sets. It endeavours to maintain a ecumenical stance, and aims to provide a coordinated approach with its advice, which includes access to professional expertise.

Membership is open to anyone, from any denomination, concerned with the accounts of a Christian Church. The current annual subscription is £12.50.  Membership benefits include the provision of the Handbook, Newsletters and ad hoc telephone / email advice. Application for membership can be made by printing the page which can be found by clicking the Membership button and completing the Application Form: it should be posted to the Treasurer, accompanied by a remittance of £12.50.
