Trustees are those who care, control and manage your church as a charity – what does that mean?

ACAT’s Trustee Training for Churches course has been designed to equip trustees with the skills they need to meet their legal and moral obligations to manage their churches well.

This is the booking for session one of a two-session course, and we highly recommend that you attend both sessions if at all possible.

Session one covers:

  • An introduction to the charity legal framework and the concept of a trustee;
  • An overview of church and charity governance; &
  • Key processes for appointing, training, and managing trustees.

Who is it for?

This course is designed for all those who are involved in the care, control and management of your church as a charity including PCC members, elders, treasurers etc. Any and all trustees and potential trustees.

Why take the course

Take this course to equip yourself as a trustee so that you can know and meet your legal and moral obligations to manage your church well. Attending as a group of trustees, or potential trustees, can be beneficial as you learn together and apply the learning to your context together.

What will be achieved

By the end of this course, you will have been introduced to the legal framework for charities and some general principles about trustees and governance within the church context. You will also have explored the core trustee duties set out in the Charity Commission guidance CC3. You will have had the opportunity to ask questions relevant to your context and about general principles.

Course Leader

Immanuel Kemp

Immanuel Kemp Tutor

Immanuel is a risk and safety management consultant with the consultancy firm Arthur D. Little. He studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge, where he met and married Julia prior to settling down in the area.

In his day job he works with clients across a range of sectors, primarily in rail transport and the oil and gas industry, specialising in risk modelling and assessment and safety management.

He has been treasurer of Eden Baptist Church in Cambridge since 2015, and has been an ACAT trainer since 2017, delivering general treasurer training as well as more specialised risk and safety courses. He holds a Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting with the AAT.

In his spare time he enjoys baking, ballroom dancing, occasionally standing in a supermarket foyer with a charity tin, attempting to learn German, and trying to self-teach his way to the Level 3 AAT qualification.
